- Emerge USA has focused on creating relationships with those who run political campaigns and the candidates/elected officials themselves. This allowed our community to gain leverage in the area in which elected officials are most vulnerable, election time. This relationship building has been the result of a small group of people working to cultivate these relationships and create a brand for the Muslim community’s political efforts. The results include opening the door for political appointments from our community, creating a interface for policy input, and elected officials attending community events.
- We have conducted trainings all over Florida, Texas, and Ohio, focusing on showing our youth the importance of early engagement in order to create opportunities in the future. This has included channeling individuals into political campaigns, registering people to vote, and working on get out the vote efforts.
- In 2008 we launched our first major GOTV effort. This was comprised of a massive phone calling campaign that reached over 23,000 Muslims in Florida; an early voting day that brought out 1000 Muslims out to vote around Florida on one day; and polling data about Floridian Muslim voting habits that resulted in increased attention about our community from campaign managers and candidates alike.
- In 2010, we began our second Get Out The Vote (GOTV) campaign. We started off with a Statewide Voter Registration Day, where we had EMERGE USA volunteers at various Mosques across Florida, registering people to vote. In this attempt, we were able to register over a 1000 people! Also, we started our Phone Banking Campaign, where we call on registered Muslim voters statewide and remind them to vote. Our goal was to create a network of people, within and outside of the Islamic Centers that are politically active in order to encourage the rest of the community to become more involved. We have been able to meet our goal by holding political training sessions at various Islamic Centers in Florida.
